According to Dr. John Oxford, internationally recognised virologist and professor at the Institute of Cell and Molecular Sciences at St. Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospital, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry in London, bipolar ionisation has proven to be effective against a number of viruses: H1N1 influenza, H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu), and corona. Dr. Oxford explains, that the ions attach to airborne pathogens, such as viruses causing a chemical reaction on the surface of the cell membrane. This deactivates the viruses, rendering them harmless, so they can no longer spread or cause infection.

In 2017, the Journal of Aerosol Science conducted a study on the effect of air ions on aerosolised MS2 bacteriophage. The MS2 bacteriophage is commonly used as a surrogate for the influenza virus and is now being used as a surrogate for other RNA viruses, such as SARS CoV-1 and SARS CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. The results demonstrated the antiviral efficacy of bipolar ionisation on the SARS CoV-2 surrogate.

To test the virus-destroying power of the Plasma Air bipolar ionisation solutions, Kitasato Research Center for Environmental Science, based in Tokyo Japan, conducted a series of controlled experiments to investigate how Plasma Air ionisers deactivate an airborne virus. The ionisers were tested against the single-strand RNA envelope structured virus H1N1 (Influenza A), which is similar to coronaviruses. The results showed a reduction in the virus after one hour.

Also, a third-party test conducted by Microbac MicroBio Test Division show deactivation of 99.9% of the Human Coronavirus (smilar to MERS & SARS). Other international studies, demonstrated that Plasma Air technology reduced other common pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (Staph), Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Escherichia coli (E. coli).     Advanced Hydroxyl Radicals Technology For Disinfection

    In the 1970s, Military Defence used OH· in the atmosphere to develop this technology for CBR (Chemical/Biological/Radiological) warfare.     The OH· Hydroxyl Radical is the most important natural oxidant in tropospheric chemistry. This molecule is often referred to as the atmosphere's "detergent", as it reacts with a large number of pollutants to kick-start the purification process. It also plays an important role in eliminating Greenhouse Gases, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane.

    Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) are particularly powerful as they are able to destroy pollutants without concentrating or transferring harmful substances into the surrounding environment. This allows for a total or almost total mineralisation of all organic pollutants, meaning that the vast majority of organic compounds are destroyed, especially when dealing with non-biodegradable compounds such as Organochlorines, PCBs, PAHs, etc. It's also a very clean and safe technology.

    Hydroxyl radicals have excellent advantages over the 3 main chemical disinfectants which are made using chlorine, alkalis and amoni-alcohol-alkali:

    • Absence of selectivity when it comes to pathogenic microorganisms, due to the high oxidation potential of 2.8V (slightly less than fluorine 3.08V).

    • OH processing time is very short. The OH· chemical reaction rate is 107 times greater than other oxidants, such as ozone, peroxide, or chlorine.

    • They are considered to be an "eco oxidant", as Hydroxyl Radicals naturally decompose into water (H2O) and oxygen (O2), without leaving behind any residual oxidants once their biochemical reactions have finished.
